Unconventional Mail Art Project of Angelo Gallo

Dal 1° al 4 ottobre 2025 il progetto Random Recipient approda a Matera con la sua nona tappa: An introductory walk.

Questa azione speciale non sarà soltanto un nuovo capitolo del progetto di mail art partecipata, ma introdurrà anche un altro lavoro che nei prossimi giorni verrà svelato.

Per questa occasione l’artista Angelo Gallo donerà a destinatari sconosciuti 10 opere xilografiche, ciascuna raffigurante l’anatomia ossea di un’ala di uccello. Le opere saranno lasciate in 10 luoghi diversi della città di Matera, in attesa di essere accolte da chiunque le ritrovi lungo il proprio cammino.

Come da tradizione, i destinatari saranno scelti dal caso: chi troverà una di queste lettere diventerà parte dell’opera, entrando in relazione diretta con essa e facendola propria.

Tenete gli occhi aperti per le strade di Matera: potreste essere voi i prossimi protagonisti di Random Recipient e portare con voi una piccola opera d’arte.

Un progetto controverso che segue le linee delle Anatomie Forzate tramite delle mail-art atipiche. Non vi è un destinatario prestabilito e non vi è una vera e propria spedizione. Si tratta di piccole opere. Inizialmente, nella prima tappa quella di Edimburgo, delle lettere sigillate contenenti una frase, in seconda battuta, dalla tappa di Palermo, delle xilografie monocrome, anatomiche. Un’anatomia che manca però negli altri lavori, si tratta delle ali o meglio di un’ala. Le opere, circa dieci per tappa, vengono depositate in vari luoghi, nella città presa in questione, geolocalizzate e postate sui social così che chiunque possa trovarle e farle proprie.

Cos’è la Memoria? Se non la capacità di possedere una storia che deriva da scelte, da decisioni, da incognite che decidiamo di risolvere. La Memoria diventa identità, costruisce il nostro presente attraverso momenti che costruiranno la nostra immagine.
Angelo Gallo attraverso queste sue azioni ci racconta un viaggio di memoria, di conoscenze, di convenzioni che hanno costruito spesso, purtroppo, delle barriere. Ecco allora la “provocAzione” dell’artista. Una sola ala, nel tentativo di smuovere le coscienze, di indurle ad andare oltre il tracciato di una strada retta e senza problemi in apparenza, ma in realtà in ostaggio di una omologazione frenetica. Angelo ci invita alla libertà, alla scoperta di una civiltà dove il nostro passato rappresenta una semplice tessera di un disegno di un mosaico più complesso. È un invito all’ascolto, alla ricerca dell’Io, per poter dire ci sono, anzi ci siamo. Senza barriere, senza confini geografici che spesso determinano idee e preconcetti, ancor prima di conoscersi. Una sola ala nel tentativo di attraversare il tempo dell’esclusione per arrivare nelle idee delle inclusioni. Una sola ala nella convinzione che dobbiamo lavorare partendo da noi stessi, per arrivare ad una condivisione di una storia, di una memoria, che mantenga le peculiarità identitarie, ma non competa per spadroneggiare ma costituisca una parte di una grande storia. Un processo creativo ed artistico complesso che l’artista porta avanti nella sua ricerca da molto tempo. Angelo Gallo ci racconta questa idea attraverso un viaggio che vi ha condotti qui; nell’agorà dell’incontro. In uno spazio contemporaneo per farvi riflettere. Nelle vostre mani è custodito un segno, una sola ala, una provocazione, che vi invita al confronto, alle passioni. Alla complicità. Un invito al cambiamento che l’artista comunica attraverso la forza dell’arte, che con il suo linguaggio universale appartiene a tutti, senza distinzione. Cos’è allora la Memoria, se non la capacità di vivere, di riuscire a trasmettere i mutamenti sani di una emozione che diventa collettiva riuscendo ad arrivare a tutti in modo unico. Una sola ala, nel tentativo di poterci affidare(?) o restituire (?) quel pezzo mancante di cui ogni giorno andiamo alla ricerca per poter osservare il mondo da un punto di vista diverso.

From October 1st to 4th, 2025, the project Random Recipient arrives in Matera with its ninth stage: An introductory walk.

This special action will not only mark a new chapter of the participatory mail art project, but will also introduce another work that will be unveiled in the coming days.

For the occasion, artist Angelo Gallo will donate 10 woodcut prints, each depicting the bony anatomy of a bird’s wing. The works will be placed in 10 different locations across the city of Matera, waiting to be discovered and embraced by whoever happens to find them.

As always, the recipients are chosen by chance: whoever finds one of these letters becomes part of the work, entering into direct relation with it and making it their own.

Keep your eyes open in the streets of Matera: you might be the next protagonist of Random Recipient and bring home a small work of art.

This controversial project follows the lines of forced anatomy through atypical mail art. There is no established recipient and there is no real shipment. The physical works themselves are small. The first stage of this project took place in Edinburgh and consisted of sealed letters containing a phrase. The second stage was displayed in Palermo and consisted of monochrome, anatomical xylographs. However, there was a piece of anatomy missing from these stages; wings, or rather, a wing. This wing represents the “provocation” of the artist; a single wing used in an attempt to stir up consciences, to persuade them to take the road less travelled. To be able to see beyond appearances and begin to understand that, in reality, we are hostages to frenetic homogenisation. This project invites us to embrace freedom, to discover a civilisation where our past represents just a small piece of a much more complex mosaic. It is an invitation to listen; to go in search of the Ego and be able to say we are, indeed we are. Without barriers or geographical boundaries that are often used to determine, through ideas and preconceptions, how we feel about each other before we even have the chance to meet. A single wing, used in an attempt to leave behind the time of exclusion and embrace the idea of inclusion. A single wing that represents our need to work on ourselves before we can fully share a story; a story where we maintain the peculiarities of identity but do not compete with each other and instead fully comprehend that we are all equally involved in an incredible story.

The artist has been pursuing this complex, creative and artistic idea within his research for a long time. Angelo Gallo explores this idea through the journey that brought you here; here to the agora for the meeting. A contemporary space constructed in a way that makes you think. In your hands there is a sign, a single wing; a provocation that invites you to confrontations, to passions. To complicity. It is an invitation to change that the artist conveys through the power of art. Art belongs to everyone; it is a universal language that holds no distinctions. What then is Memory, if not the ability to live, the ability to affect the collective emotions of everyone in a unique way? A single wing, used in an attempt to entrust or return that missing piece that we search for every day. A single wing that, perhaps, can allow us all to observe the world from a different perspective.

Vom 1. bis 4. Oktober 2025 macht das Projekt Random Recipient in Matera Station – mit seiner neunten Etappe: An introductory walk.

Diese besondere Aktion ist nicht nur ein neues Kapitel des partizipativen Mail-Art-Projekts, sondern auch die Einführung eines weiteren Werkes, das in den kommenden Tagen vorgestellt wird.

Zu diesem Anlass wird der Künstler Angelo Gallo 10 Holzschnitte verschenken, die jeweils die knöcherne Anatomie eines Vogelflügels darstellen. Die Arbeiten werden an 10 verschiedenen Orten in der Stadt Matera hinterlassen, um von Zufallsfindern entdeckt und angenommen zu werden.

Wie immer bestimmt der Zufall die Empfänger: Wer einen dieser Briefe findet, wird Teil des Werkes, tritt in direkte Beziehung zu ihm und macht es zu seinem eigenen.

Haltet die Augen offen in den Straßen von Matera: Vielleicht seid ihr die nächsten Protagonisten von Random Recipient und nehmt ein kleines Kunstwerk mit nach Hause.

Ein kontroverses Projekt, das den Linien der erzwungenen Anatomie durch atypische Postkunst folgt. Es gibt keinen festgelegten Empfänger und keine echte Sendung. Es handelt sich um kleine Werke. Zunächst in der ersten Stufe die von Edinburgh, von versiegelten Buchstaben, die eine Phrase enthalten, zweitens aus der Stufe von Palermo, von monochromatischen, anatomischen Xylographen. Eine Anatomie, die in den anderen Arbeiten fehlt, sind jedoch die Flügel oder besser ein Flügel. Die Werke, etwa zehn pro Bühne, werden an verschiedenen Orten in der jeweiligen Stadt abgelegt, geografisch geortet und in den sozialen Medien veröffentlicht, sodass jeder sie finden und zu seinen eigenen machen kann.

Was ist die Erinnerung? Wenn nicht die Fähigkeit, eine Geschichte zu besitzen, die sich aus Entscheidungen, Spaltungen und Unbekannten ergibt, die wir lösen wollen. Erinnerung wird Identität, baut unsere Gegenwart durch Momente auf, die unser Image aufbauen.

Durch diese Handlungen erzählt Angelo Gallo von einer Reise der Erinnerung, des Wissens, der Konventionen, die leider oft Barrieren gebildet haben. Hier liegt dann die „ProvokAktion“ des Künstlers. Ein einziger Flügel, der versucht, das Gewissen zu erregen, um es dazu zu bewegen, den Pfad einer geraden Straße zu verlassen, und zwar ohne Probleme im Aussehen, aber in Wirklichkeit als Geisel einer frenetischen Homologation. Angelo lädt uns in die Freiheit ein, um eine Zivilisation zu entdecken, in der unsere Vergangenheit ein einfaches Stück einer Zeichnung eines komplexeren Mosaiks darstellt. Es ist eine Einladung, auf der Suche nach dem Ego um sagen zu können, dass ich da bin, eher wir. Ohne Barrieren, ohne geografische Grenzen, die oft schon vor dem Kennenlernen Ideen und Vorurteile bestimmen. Ein einzelner Flügel, der versucht, die Zeit der Ausgrenzung zu durchqueren, um zu den Ideen der Einschlüsse zu gelangen. Ein einziger Flügel in dem Glauben, dass wir von uns aus arbeiten müssen, um zu einer gemeinsamen Darstellung einer Geschichte, einer Erinnerung zu gelangen, die die Eigentümlichkeit unserer Identität beibehält, aber nicht um die Dominanz konkurriert, sondern Teil einer großen Geschichte ist. Ein komplexer kreativer und künstlerischer Prozess, den der Künstler in seiner Forschung seit langem verfolgt. Angelo Gallo erzählt uns diese Idee auf einer Reise, die Sie hierher brachte; in der Agora des Treffens. In einem zeitgenössischen Raum zum Nachdenken. In euren Händen ist ein Zeichen, ein einziger Flügel, eine Provokation, die euch zur Konfrontation, zu Leidenschaften einlädt. Zur Mittäterschaft. eine Einladung zur Veränderung, die der Künstler durch die Kraft der Kunst kommuniziert, die mit ihrer universellen Sprache allen ohne Unterschied gehört. Was ist Erinnerung dann, wenn nicht die Fähigkeit zu leben, die gesunden Veränderungen einer Emotion zu übermitteln, die kollektiv wird und es schafft, alle auf einzigartige Weise zu erreichen. Ein einziger Flügel, der versucht, uns das fehlende Teil anzuvertrauen oder zurückzugeben, das wir jeden Tag suchen, um die Welt aus einem anderen Blickwinkel betrachten zu können.
