Unconventional Mail Art Project of Angelo Gallo

Random Recipient è un progetto artistico che nasce da un gesto semplice: lasciare una lettera nello spazio pubblico e permettere che venga trovata da uno sconosciuto.

Non c’è un destinatario preciso.

Non c’è un percorso stabilito.

Non c’è una storia già scritta.

Ogni lettera è affidata al caso, al tempo e allo sguardo di chi la incontrerà.

Il progetto prende forma all’interno della ricerca sulle Anatomie Forzate, una riflessione sul modo in cui i sistemi culturali, sociali e personali modellano il nostro modo di vedere il mondo. Nel corso della vita costruiamo strutture interpretative che ci aiutano a orientarci nella realtà, ma che allo stesso tempo finiscono per diventare limiti invisibili. Abituati a queste strutture, smettiamo gradualmente di mettere in discussione ciò che crediamo di conoscere.

Le lettere di Random Recipient si inseriscono proprio in questo spazio di possibilità.

Quando una persona trova una lettera, accade qualcosa di minimo ma significativo: per un momento la normalità si incrina. Un oggetto inatteso interrompe il ritmo della quotidianità e apre una domanda. Non è chiaro perché quella lettera sia lì, per chi sia stata scritta, o quale storia porti con sé.

Questo piccolo scarto è il punto di partenza del progetto.

Un invito a osservare di nuovo

Random Recipient non vuole offrire risposte, ma creare occasioni di riflessione.

Ogni lettera è un invito a rallentare e a interrogarsi sul modo in cui percepiamo il mondo. Spesso ci accontentiamo delle interpretazioni che abbiamo già costruito: vediamo ciò che ci aspettiamo di vedere, riconosciamo ciò che abbiamo già imparato a riconoscere.

Ma cosa succederebbe se provassimo a osservare di nuovo?

Se mettessimo in dubbio le categorie attraverso cui interpretiamo la realtà?

Se accettassimo l’idea che esistano altre prospettive, altri modi di comprendere ciò che ci circonda?

Il progetto propone un esercizio di sensibilità.

Non si tratta di trovare una verità definitiva, ma di sviluppare la capacità di rimanere aperti al dubbio, alla complessità e alla possibilità di nuove visioni.

Alcune domande per iniziare

Se hai trovato una lettera, o se sei arrivato qui per caso, puoi iniziare da alcune semplici domande:

Quante cose nella tua vita consideri “naturali” solo perché le hai sempre viste così?
In quali momenti hai cambiato davvero prospettiva su qualcosa che credevi di conoscere?
Quanto del tuo modo di vedere il mondo nasce da esperienze personali e quanto da strutture culturali che hai interiorizzato?
Se potessi osservare la realtà senza i filtri che hai costruito negli anni, cosa vedresti di diverso?

Non è necessario trovare risposte immediate.

A volte il primo passo è semplicemente accorgersi che guardare non è la stessa cosa che vedere.

Un esercizio di sensibilità

Random Recipient è un invito a coltivare uno sguardo più attento e consapevole.

A non limitarsi a ciò che appare familiare.

A non accontentarsi delle spiegazioni più immediate.

A restare curiosi.

Perché ogni volta che mettiamo in discussione ciò che pensiamo di sapere, si apre uno spazio nuovo in cui immaginare e comprendere il mondo in modo diverso.

E forse è proprio in questo spazio che può nascere una forma più profonda di sensibilità.

Dal 9 all’11 marzo 2026 il progetto Random Recipient approda a Milano con la sua decim tappa: An introductory walk.

Questa azione speciale non sarà soltanto un nuovo capitolo del progetto di mail art partecipata, ma introdurrà anche alla mostra LIBERA CIRCOLAZIONE ENTRO FRAGILI CONFINI che. inaugurerà giorno 11 marzo alle 18:00 presso la Galleria Raffaella De Chirico Arte Contemporanea.

Per questa occasione l’artista Angelo Gallo donerà a destinatari sconosciuti 10 opere xilografiche, ciascuna raffigurante l’anatomia ossea di un’ala di uccello. Le opere saranno lasciate in 10 luoghi diversi della città di Matera, in attesa di essere accolte da chiunque le ritrovi lungo il proprio cammino.

Come da tradizione, i destinatari saranno scelti dal caso: chi troverà una di queste lettere diventerà parte dell’opera, entrando in relazione diretta con essa e facendola propria.

Tenete gli occhi aperti per le strade di Matera: potreste essere voi i prossimi protagonisti di Random Recipient e portare con voi una piccola opera d’arte.

Un progetto controverso che segue le linee delle Anatomie Forzate tramite delle mail-art atipiche. Non vi è un destinatario prestabilito e non vi è una vera e propria spedizione. Si tratta di piccole opere. Inizialmente, nella prima tappa quella di Edimburgo, delle lettere sigillate contenenti una frase, in seconda battuta, dalla tappa di Palermo, delle xilografie monocrome, anatomiche. Un’anatomia che manca però negli altri lavori, si tratta delle ali o meglio di un’ala. Le opere, circa dieci per tappa, vengono depositate in vari luoghi, nella città presa in questione, geolocalizzate e postate sui social così che chiunque possa trovarle e farle proprie.

Cos’è la Memoria? Se non la capacità di possedere una storia che deriva da scelte, da decisioni, da incognite che decidiamo di risolvere. La Memoria diventa identità, costruisce il nostro presente attraverso momenti che costruiranno la nostra immagine.
Angelo Gallo attraverso queste sue azioni ci racconta un viaggio di memoria, di conoscenze, di convenzioni che hanno costruito spesso, purtroppo, delle barriere. Ecco allora la “provocAzione” dell’artista. Una sola ala, nel tentativo di smuovere le coscienze, di indurle ad andare oltre il tracciato di una strada retta e senza problemi in apparenza, ma in realtà in ostaggio di una omologazione frenetica. Angelo ci invita alla libertà, alla scoperta di una civiltà dove il nostro passato rappresenta una semplice tessera di un disegno di un mosaico più complesso. È un invito all’ascolto, alla ricerca dell’Io, per poter dire ci sono, anzi ci siamo. Senza barriere, senza confini geografici che spesso determinano idee e preconcetti, ancor prima di conoscersi. Una sola ala nel tentativo di attraversare il tempo dell’esclusione per arrivare nelle idee delle inclusioni. Una sola ala nella convinzione che dobbiamo lavorare partendo da noi stessi, per arrivare ad una condivisione di una storia, di una memoria, che mantenga le peculiarità identitarie, ma non competa per spadroneggiare ma costituisca una parte di una grande storia. Un processo creativo ed artistico complesso che l’artista porta avanti nella sua ricerca da molto tempo. Angelo Gallo ci racconta questa idea attraverso un viaggio che vi ha condotti qui; nell’agorà dell’incontro. In uno spazio contemporaneo per farvi riflettere. Nelle vostre mani è custodito un segno, una sola ala, una provocazione, che vi invita al confronto, alle passioni. Alla complicità. Un invito al cambiamento che l’artista comunica attraverso la forza dell’arte, che con il suo linguaggio universale appartiene a tutti, senza distinzione. Cos’è allora la Memoria, se non la capacità di vivere, di riuscire a trasmettere i mutamenti sani di una emozione che diventa collettiva riuscendo ad arrivare a tutti in modo unico. Una sola ala, nel tentativo di poterci affidare(?) o restituire (?) quel pezzo mancante di cui ogni giorno andiamo alla ricerca per poter osservare il mondo da un punto di vista diverso.

Random Recipient is an artistic project born from a simple gesture: leaving a letter in public space and allowing it to be found by a stranger.

There is no specific recipient.

There is no predetermined path.

There is no story already written.

Each letter is entrusted to chance, to time, and to the gaze of whoever encounters it.

The project emerges from the research behind Forced Anatomies, a reflection on the ways cultural, social, and personal systems shape how we perceive the world. Over the course of our lives we build interpretative structures that help us orient ourselves within reality, but which at the same time can become invisible limits. As we grow accustomed to these structures, we gradually stop questioning what we believe we already know.

The letters of Random Recipient exist precisely within this space of possibility.

When someone finds a letter, something small yet meaningful happens: for a moment, normality cracks. An unexpected object interrupts the rhythm of everyday life and opens a question. It is unclear why that letter is there, for whom it was written, or what story it carries.

This subtle shift is the starting point of the project.

An invitation to observe again

Random Recipient does not seek to provide answers, but to create opportunities for reflection.

Each letter is an invitation to slow down and question the way we perceive the world. Often we settle for the interpretations we have already built: we see what we expect to see, we recognize only what we have learned to recognize.

But what would happen if we tried to observe again?

What if we questioned the categories through which we interpret reality?

What if we accepted that other perspectives and other ways of understanding the world might exist?

The project proposes an exercise in sensitivity.

It is not about finding a definitive truth, but about developing the ability to remain open to doubt, complexity, and the possibility of new visions.

A few questions to begin

If you have found a letter, or if you arrived here by chance, you may begin with a few simple questions:

How many things in your life do you consider “natural” simply because you have always seen them that way?
When was the last time you truly changed your perspective about something you thought you understood?
How much of your worldview comes from personal experience, and how much from cultural structures you have internalized?
If you could observe reality without the filters you have built over time, what might you see differently?

There is no need to find immediate answers.

Sometimes the first step is simply realizing that looking is not the same as seeing.

An exercise in sensitivity

Random Recipient is an invitation to cultivate a more attentive and conscious gaze.

Not to limit yourself to what feels familiar.

Not to settle for the most immediate explanations.

To remain curious.

Because every time we question what we think we know, a new space opens where we can imagine and understand the world differently.

And perhaps it is precisely within this space that a deeper form of sensitivity can emerge.

From March 9 to March 11, 2026, the project Random Recipient arrives in Milan with its tenth stop: “An Introductory Walk.”

This special action will not only mark a new chapter in the participatory mail art project, but will also introduce the exhibition FREE CIRCULATION WITHIN FRAGILE BOUNDARIES, which will open on March 11 at 6:00 PM at the Raffaella De Chirico Arte Contemporanea Gallery.

As always, the recipients are chosen by chance: whoever finds one of these letters becomes part of the work, entering into direct relation with it and making it their own.

Keep your eyes open in the streets of Matera: you might be the next protagonist of Random Recipient and bring home a small work of art.

This controversial project follows the lines of forced anatomy through atypical mail art. There is no established recipient and there is no real shipment. The physical works themselves are small. The first stage of this project took place in Edinburgh and consisted of sealed letters containing a phrase. The second stage was displayed in Palermo and consisted of monochrome, anatomical xylographs. However, there was a piece of anatomy missing from these stages; wings, or rather, a wing. This wing represents the “provocation” of the artist; a single wing used in an attempt to stir up consciences, to persuade them to take the road less travelled. To be able to see beyond appearances and begin to understand that, in reality, we are hostages to frenetic homogenisation. This project invites us to embrace freedom, to discover a civilisation where our past represents just a small piece of a much more complex mosaic. It is an invitation to listen; to go in search of the Ego and be able to say we are, indeed we are. Without barriers or geographical boundaries that are often used to determine, through ideas and preconceptions, how we feel about each other before we even have the chance to meet. A single wing, used in an attempt to leave behind the time of exclusion and embrace the idea of inclusion. A single wing that represents our need to work on ourselves before we can fully share a story; a story where we maintain the peculiarities of identity but do not compete with each other and instead fully comprehend that we are all equally involved in an incredible story.

The artist has been pursuing this complex, creative and artistic idea within his research for a long time. Angelo Gallo explores this idea through the journey that brought you here; here to the agora for the meeting. A contemporary space constructed in a way that makes you think. In your hands there is a sign, a single wing; a provocation that invites you to confrontations, to passions. To complicity. It is an invitation to change that the artist conveys through the power of art. Art belongs to everyone; it is a universal language that holds no distinctions. What then is Memory, if not the ability to live, the ability to affect the collective emotions of everyone in a unique way? A single wing, used in an attempt to entrust or return that missing piece that we search for every day. A single wing that, perhaps, can allow us all to observe the world from a different perspective.

Random Recipient

Random Recipient ist ein künstlerisches Projekt, das aus einer einfachen Geste entsteht: einen Brief im öffentlichen Raum zu hinterlassen und zuzulassen, dass er von einer unbekannten Person gefunden wird.

Es gibt keinen bestimmten Empfänger.

Es gibt keinen festgelegten Weg.

Es gibt keine bereits geschriebene Geschichte.

Jeder Brief wird dem Zufall, der Zeit und dem Blick derjenigen Person anvertraut, die ihm begegnet.

Das Projekt entsteht im Rahmen der künstlerischen Forschung zu Forced Anatomies, einer Reflexion darüber, wie kulturelle, soziale und persönliche Systeme unsere Wahrnehmung der Welt formen. Im Laufe unseres Lebens entwickeln wir interpretative Strukturen, die uns helfen, uns in der Realität zu orientieren, die jedoch zugleich zu unsichtbaren Grenzen werden können. Wenn wir uns an diese Strukturen gewöhnen, hören wir allmählich auf, das zu hinterfragen, was wir zu kennen glauben.

Die Briefe von Random Recipient bewegen sich genau in diesem Raum der Möglichkeiten.

Wenn jemand einen Brief findet, geschieht etwas Kleines, aber Bedeutungsvolles: Für einen Moment bekommt die Normalität einen Riss. Ein unerwartetes Objekt unterbricht den Rhythmus des Alltags und eröffnet eine Frage. Es ist unklar, warum dieser Brief dort liegt, für wen er geschrieben wurde oder welche Geschichte er in sich trägt.

Diese kleine Verschiebung ist der Ausgangspunkt des Projekts.

Eine Einladung, erneut zu beobachten

Random Recipient möchte keine Antworten geben, sondern Gelegenheiten zur Reflexion schaffen.

Jeder Brief ist eine Einladung, langsamer zu werden und die eigene Wahrnehmung der Welt zu hinterfragen. Oft begnügen wir uns mit den Interpretationen, die wir bereits aufgebaut haben: Wir sehen, was wir zu sehen erwarten, und erkennen nur das, was wir gelernt haben zu erkennen.

Aber was würde geschehen, wenn wir versuchen würden, erneut zu beobachten?

Was wäre, wenn wir die Kategorien infrage stellen, durch die wir die Realität interpretieren?

Was wäre, wenn wir akzeptieren, dass es andere Perspektiven und andere Möglichkeiten gibt, die Welt zu verstehen?

Das Projekt schlägt eine Übung der Sensibilität vor.

Es geht nicht darum, eine endgültige Wahrheit zu finden, sondern die Fähigkeit zu entwickeln, offen für Zweifel, Komplexität und neue Visionen zu bleiben.

Einige Fragen zum Einstieg

Wenn du einen Brief gefunden hast oder zufällig hier gelandet bist, kannst du mit einigen einfachen Fragen beginnen:

Wie viele Dinge in deinem Leben hältst du für „natürlich“, nur weil du sie immer so gesehen hast?
Wann hast du zuletzt deine Perspektive auf etwas wirklich verändert?
Wie viel deiner Weltanschauung stammt aus persönlicher Erfahrung und wie viel aus kulturellen Strukturen, die du verinnerlicht hast?
Wenn du die Realität ohne die Filter betrachten könntest, die du im Laufe der Zeit aufgebaut hast – was würdest du anders sehen?

Es ist nicht notwendig, sofort Antworten zu finden.

Manchmal besteht der erste Schritt einfach darin zu erkennen, dass schauen nicht dasselbe ist wie sehen.

Eine Übung der Sensibilität

Random Recipient ist eine Einladung, einen aufmerksameren und bewussteren Blick zu entwickeln.

Sich nicht auf das Vertraute zu beschränken.

Sich nicht mit den naheliegendsten Erklärungen zufriedenzugeben.

Neugierig zu bleiben.

Denn jedes Mal, wenn wir infrage stellen, was wir zu wissen glauben, öffnet sich ein neuer Raum, in dem wir die Welt anders verstehen und neu denken können.

Und vielleicht entsteht genau in diesem Raum eine tiefere Form von Sensibilität.

Vom 9. bis 11. März 2026 erreicht das Projekt Random Recipient Mailand mit seiner zehnten Station: „An Introductory Walk“.

Diese besondere Aktion stellt nicht nur ein neues Kapitel des partizipativen Mail-Art-Projekts dar, sondern führt auch in die Ausstellung LIBERA CIRCOLAZIONE ENTRO FRAGILI CONFINI ein, die am 11. März um 18:00 Uhr in der Galleria Raffaella De Chirico Arte Contemporanea eröffnet wird.

Wie immer bestimmt der Zufall die Empfänger: Wer einen dieser Briefe findet, wird Teil des Werkes, tritt in direkte Beziehung zu ihm und macht es zu seinem eigenen.

Haltet die Augen offen in den Straßen von Matera: Vielleicht seid ihr die nächsten Protagonisten von Random Recipient und nehmt ein kleines Kunstwerk mit nach Hause.

Ein kontroverses Projekt, das den Linien der erzwungenen Anatomie durch atypische Postkunst folgt. Es gibt keinen festgelegten Empfänger und keine echte Sendung. Es handelt sich um kleine Werke. Zunächst in der ersten Stufe die von Edinburgh, von versiegelten Buchstaben, die eine Phrase enthalten, zweitens aus der Stufe von Palermo, von monochromatischen, anatomischen Xylographen. Eine Anatomie, die in den anderen Arbeiten fehlt, sind jedoch die Flügel oder besser ein Flügel. Die Werke, etwa zehn pro Bühne, werden an verschiedenen Orten in der jeweiligen Stadt abgelegt, geografisch geortet und in den sozialen Medien veröffentlicht, sodass jeder sie finden und zu seinen eigenen machen kann.

Was ist die Erinnerung? Wenn nicht die Fähigkeit, eine Geschichte zu besitzen, die sich aus Entscheidungen, Spaltungen und Unbekannten ergibt, die wir lösen wollen. Erinnerung wird Identität, baut unsere Gegenwart durch Momente auf, die unser Image aufbauen.

Durch diese Handlungen erzählt Angelo Gallo von einer Reise der Erinnerung, des Wissens, der Konventionen, die leider oft Barrieren gebildet haben. Hier liegt dann die „ProvokAktion“ des Künstlers. Ein einziger Flügel, der versucht, das Gewissen zu erregen, um es dazu zu bewegen, den Pfad einer geraden Straße zu verlassen, und zwar ohne Probleme im Aussehen, aber in Wirklichkeit als Geisel einer frenetischen Homologation. Angelo lädt uns in die Freiheit ein, um eine Zivilisation zu entdecken, in der unsere Vergangenheit ein einfaches Stück einer Zeichnung eines komplexeren Mosaiks darstellt. Es ist eine Einladung, auf der Suche nach dem Ego um sagen zu können, dass ich da bin, eher wir. Ohne Barrieren, ohne geografische Grenzen, die oft schon vor dem Kennenlernen Ideen und Vorurteile bestimmen. Ein einzelner Flügel, der versucht, die Zeit der Ausgrenzung zu durchqueren, um zu den Ideen der Einschlüsse zu gelangen. Ein einziger Flügel in dem Glauben, dass wir von uns aus arbeiten müssen, um zu einer gemeinsamen Darstellung einer Geschichte, einer Erinnerung zu gelangen, die die Eigentümlichkeit unserer Identität beibehält, aber nicht um die Dominanz konkurriert, sondern Teil einer großen Geschichte ist. Ein komplexer kreativer und künstlerischer Prozess, den der Künstler in seiner Forschung seit langem verfolgt. Angelo Gallo erzählt uns diese Idee auf einer Reise, die Sie hierher brachte; in der Agora des Treffens. In einem zeitgenössischen Raum zum Nachdenken. In euren Händen ist ein Zeichen, ein einziger Flügel, eine Provokation, die euch zur Konfrontation, zu Leidenschaften einlädt. Zur Mittäterschaft. eine Einladung zur Veränderung, die der Künstler durch die Kraft der Kunst kommuniziert, die mit ihrer universellen Sprache allen ohne Unterschied gehört. Was ist Erinnerung dann, wenn nicht die Fähigkeit zu leben, die gesunden Veränderungen einer Emotion zu übermitteln, die kollektiv wird und es schafft, alle auf einzigartige Weise zu erreichen. Ein einziger Flügel, der versucht, uns das fehlende Teil anzuvertrauen oder zurückzugeben, das wir jeden Tag suchen, um die Welt aus einem anderen Blickwinkel betrachten zu können.
